Have You Been Pwned, AMZN Slashes Arugula Prices, & Cortana and Alexa Team Up

I’m back from vacation and back on the air to share this week’s technology news on First News 570. Listen in LIVE and here Mark and I kick around the zany and unpredictable industry who’s mission is to save the world.

SPAMBOT SCOOPS UP 711 MILLION EMAIL ADDRESSES IN BIGGEST HEIST EVER
Parisian malware researcher, Benkow, has discovered a spamming operation that has lifted over 700 million email addresses. The size of the spam operation is the largest of its kind with many of the hijacked email addresses being used to spam others into getting their address lifted. People interested in knowing if their email address was caught in the breach can use Troy Hunt’s website, haveibeenpwned.com. I can safely report that my email address has only been found on one breached site. Which only means I use the internet for more research purposes than anything else and I don’t have a social media life to speak of. Still this number is staggering and eclipses anything we’ve seen from Yahoo’s massive breach, the ashleymadison hack, or Adult Friend Finder.

IN STUNNING DISPLAY OF COOPERATION AI’S WORK WITH EACH OTHER
In the dog-eat-dog, crabs-in-a-barrel, tortoise-vs-hare, scorpion-on-the-turtle’s-back, Jedi-Sith competitive world of the technology industry, you’ll mostly tech behemoths battle against each other for users and eyeballs absorbing all of these precious bits and bytes. In a crazy turn of competitive cooperation, Amazon and Microsoft will be letting Alexa and Cortana to talk to each other and ask them to do things. Which I think is totally amazing. Coming up with a common scheme for AI’s to work can open up new applications and opportunities as well as speed up our own demise.

The other big Amazon news comes after the book, no, clothing, no, retail, no, technology compa-, conglomerate purchased Whole Foods. In a demonstration that the world enjoys cheap stuff, Bezos and Co cut Whole Food’s prices by 43% across the board, including in-store Amazon Echo Dots. I know what you’re thinking. Oh great! Amazon can now recommend cut leaf swiss chard with my Amazon Prime purchases. And you’re right. At some point, I’ll imagine amazon will introduce one-touch checkout in some form while paying a right sized price for organic, gluten-free, non-dairy, milk.

IN ANTI-CLIMACTIC FASHION, UBER BOARD PICKS NON-DRAMATIC CEO
Uber is the tech company drama that keeps on giving, and it looks like those days may be heading to an end. Uber’s board decided to go against flash and dash and have named former-Expedia CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi as CEO. Khosrowshahi is known as an operator with an HR mantra of, “our employees must not only be good, but also be ‘good’.” The former Expedia CEO led the company to staffing itself with 51% of women, a good customer service ratio, and in general doesn’t make any news about himself. So, maybe, we’ll be reporting on fewer Uber news stories now. The best comment I’ve heard about this hire, is that somewhere Kalanick is looking at Uber’s headquarters in a dark room through horizontal blinds and is surrounded by empty beer cans and pizza boxes waiting for Khosrowshahi to fail.
