Russian Paid Pro Trolls Influenced Election, Apple Watches Can’t Keep It Up, and Electric Bus Sets Record

Technology news continues to amaze us week in and week out. This week we talk about new distance records, new watches, and more Amazon on First News 570 with Mark Starling. Make sure you are listening in.

IT WASN’T JUST PARANOIA RUSSIAN GROUPS INFLUENCED ELECTION THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA
I’m not one for conspiracy theories and choose to believe that people are smarter than we give them credit for, but mounting evidence is surfacing that it was Russian agents, Professional Trolls, who were creating Facebook groups to mobilize citizens in protest against Hillary Clinton during last year’s Presidential election. The latest evidence comes in the form of “Being Patriotic” a Facebook group that was created by Professional Trolls hired by associates closes to Vladimir Putin. Regardless of your side, you have to feel a little disturbed about how much Russia has engaged social media. Now, that’s not to say that we always played fair, the US has history of influencing elections. It just feels sucky when it’s done to us.

APPLE WATCHES CAN’T STAY CONNECTED BEFORE LAUNCH
It’s not out yet, but the reviews are in. And it’s not all good. According to reviews by theVerge and The Wall Street Journal, the Apple Watch 3 appears to intermittently lose LTE connectivity because it’s trying to connect to open WiFi networks. This poses a legitimate problem because the device drops connectivity in favor of a stronger signal, but not necessarily network connectivity. Apparently, Apple is aware of the problem, is shrugging it off, and have been telling reviewers that a software update will correct the problem. Usually known for its flawless execution, this is a tarnishing development for the Fruit company.

ELECTRIC BUS SETS LAND BASED DISTANCE RECORD
The Catalyst E2 Max Bus (you can tell a tech company named this), a 40ft, electricity powered bus, has set a new record for distance traveled on a single charge. The bus, designed by California company, Proterra traveled 1, 102. 2 miles on a single charge. This breaks a record set by a light-duty passenger vehicle that traveled 1013.76 miles and weighed 46 times lighter than the bus. Proterra’s new battery technology is expected to herald a new era of heavy duty electric vehicles. They can bring these to DC, because Metro buses are loud and stinky. I’m expecting a driverless edition soon which will mean your chances of survival go up because you may not be run over.

AMAZON CONTINUES TO HONE ALGORITHMS AFTER RECOMMENDED ITEMS CAN BE USED FOR MAKING BOMBS
Of course it’s a titillating headline, but we cover a lot of Amazon. And the latest news from AMZN shows why we can’t over estimate technology. I’ll admit to using Amazon’s “Customers who bought this, also bought” system and may snatch up corn cob holders after buying a microplane. But, Amazon’s recommendation system has been suggesting that we purchase the materials needed to make household bombs. Amazon has been suggesting chemicals that can be used for making explosives along with ball bearings, and electronics that can be used as detonators which can be bought on the site. All of the items are perfectly legal. We’ve had AIs compose music, create uninspirational posters, make horror movie trailers, and now suggest that we buy things to blow us up.
